The Testing Laboratory

Your DNA based diagnostic test, performed by one of the top DNA testing laboratories in North America (DNA My Dog), will genetically identify over 100 component breeds and determine which ones are prevalent in your dog. The Canine Breed Determination test cannot confirm that a dog is a purebred. The test is designed for the sole purpose of identifying breeds found in the genetic composition of mixed breed dogs. If only one breed is detected, it could be that there is DNA present from another breed, but in amounts too small to be detected. We believe that our validated breeds (see table below) cover over 95% of the mixed breed population. This ensures our database has the most relevant breeds. We don't test uncommon breeds or breeds not American Kennel Club® registered. While having a large number of breeds is advantageous to a point, it may also lead to a greater possibility of inaccurate results. Our Canine DNA test is one of the most accurate available. We stand behind the results of every single test we perform.

Restricted Dog Breeds in Australia (Pit Bull Terrier/American Pit Bull Terrier)

“Pit Bull” is not on our list of breeds as the term Pit Bull has come to describe several types of dogs, often of mixed breed, that share similar physical characteristics such as American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Boxer, Bulldog, Bull Terrier and Mastiff.
These breeds can be identified separately.

Electronic results are normally available from 14 to 21 days after the swabs are received by Animal DNA Laboratory. In the testing process, breeds are detected as ranges rather than absolute values. These are then listed on your certificate as Levels, which are defined as follows:

  • Level 1: Over 75% of the DNA found in your dog is from the breed listed.
  • Level 2: Each breed listed represents between 37-74% of your dog’s DNA.
  • Level 3: Each breed listed represents between 20-36% of your dog’s DNA.
  • Level 4: Each breed listed represents between 10-19% of your dog’s DNA.
  • Level 5: Each breed listed represents less than 9% of your dog’s DNA.
